Compensation will be available for RMG workers from 1st July

Bangladesh Government has extended the coverage of its pilot employment injury scheme to include compensation for accidents that occur during workers’ commutes to and from work. The decision, made during the 8th meeting of the Employment Injury Scheme (EIS) Pilot governance board, was unanimously approved and is set to take effect from July 1st. This move aims to safeguard industries and workers in Bangladesh. Key stakeholders, including employers’ and workers’ organizations, along with government agencies, supported this decision.

International Labour Organization (ILO) highlighted that since June 21, 2022, the EIS Pilot has been compensating injured workers and dependents of deceased workers in the ready-made garments sector for work-related accidents. With the inclusion of commuting accidents, the initiative is expected to provide enhanced protection to workers and improve industrial relations. Technical experts provided insights into the technical and financial aspects of this expansion, ensuring separate records for commuting accidents occurring outside the factory premises. Employers’ associations expressed support for workers’ fundamental rights to social protection, provided these benefits do not compromise industry competitiveness.
