Energy is now too expensive to waste: Experts
Bangladesh’s industrial sector is grappling with reduced gas supply and rising energy costs despite a significant price hike, according to energy experts and industry leaders at a recent round table in Dhaka.
Ijaz Hossain, a former Buet professor, highlighted that industrial gas consumption declined in FY24, raising concerns over shrinking capacity or inefficient energy use. He emphasized the urgency of energy efficiency to cut costs and carbon emissions. Proper housekeeping alone could save industries up to 10% in energy consumption, he said.
Industry leaders, including Shams Mahmud of Shasha Denims Ltd, criticized inconsistent energy supply for reducing the lifespan of energy-efficient technologies. They also noted challenges in adopting renewable energy, citing high duties on solar components and lack of low-interest financing.
Speakers called for policy alignment, uninterrupted energy supply, and better government support to ensure sustainability and competitiveness in global markets amid tightening environmental regulations.
