RMG workers end the road blockade as owners paid off their arrears
Workers from a garment factory in Gazipur ended their 10-hour protest on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway after the owner paid their three months of overdue wages. The protest began at APL Apparels’ gate in the Bhogra area, with workers demanding unpaid wages. When their demands weren’t met, they moved their demonstration to the highway, severely disrupting traffic.
Police mediated discussions between the workers and factory management. By 7 pm, the owner settled the arrears, and the workers dispersed, allowing traffic to return to normal. Workers at another factory, MM Knitwear Limited, also protested for bonuses but later returned home without further disruption.
Nine factories in Gazipur remained closed, with four shut down under Section 13(1) of the Labour Act due to an illegal strike. Despite these closures, 98% of factories in the district, which employs about 2.2 million workers, continued production without issue.
