Safety net for RMG workers

Bangladesh has launched the Employment Injury Scheme Pilot (EIS-PILOT) to compensate readymade garment (RMG) workers for workplace injuries or fatalities, providing financial stability to them and their families. Implemented with support from the International Labor Organization (ILO) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the initiative is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Netherlands, and Canada, with contributions from global brands.

The EIS-PILOT aims to ensure a consistent income for affected workers and covers medical costs, lost income, rehabilitation services, and financial support for families in case of death or permanent disability. The program also requires extensive data collection on workplace accidents to improve safety standards.

Since its launch on June 22, 2022, around 150 factories employing 150,000 workers have participated. Data shows males account for the majority of fatal and disability cases, despite female workers being the majority in the sector, indicating possible gender disparities in job safety. Overall, the program reflects ongoing efforts to improve workplace safety and compensation in Bangladesh’s RMG industry.
