Government initiatives to establish power generation from waste
The government is moving forward with plans to establish a waste-to-energy power plant in Brahmanbaria, aiming to generate electricity at a unit cost of Tk 21.16. The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) will spearhead the development of this facility, projected to produce 11 megawatts (MW) of electricity.
If the government opts to procure electricity at tariff rates, it will incur an expenditure of approximately Tk 4,068 crore over a 25-year period. The approved proposal, chaired by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in a meeting of the cabinet committee on public purchase, received the green light.
Cabinet Division Additional Secretary Sayeed Mahbub Khan confirmed that the BPDB had secured approval for the establishment of the waste-to-energy plant in Brahmanbaria municipality. The project aligns with the government’s commitment to sustainable energy practices by utilizing waste as a resource for electricity generation.
In addition to the waste-to-energy initiative, the cabinet committee also granted tariff approval for the construction of a 100-MW (AC) solar power plant by the BPDB in Sonagazi upazila of Feni. If electricity is procured at tariff rates, the government is expected to pay Tk 3,566.4 crore over a 20-year duration. These developments reflect the government’s multifaceted approach to diversifying its energy sources and promoting environmentally friendly solutions.
