Bangladesh-Thailand to talk about FTA next month

Bangladesh and Thailand are set to begin Free Trade Agreement (FTA) talks in Dhaka next month, aiming to boost bilateral trade to $2 billion. Thai Ambassador to Bangladesh, Makawadee Sumitmor, announced that a high-level Thai trade delegation will visit Bangladesh in late August to meet with a delegation led by State Minister for Commerce Ahasanul Islam Titu.

The announcement was made during a press conference on a Thai food festival in Dhaka, organized by Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka in collaboration with the Thai Trade Centre and the Thai Embassy. The festival will run from July 10-13, alongside the Thailand Trade Show.

Ambassador Sumitmor highlighted the potential for increased Thai investment in Bangladesh, which could help reduce the trade gap between the two countries. She noted that Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, during her visit to Thailand in April, invited Thai businesses to invest in Bangladesh. Trade fairs and exhibitions, featuring 64 exhibitors, are seen as key to strengthening bilateral ties.

Thailand remains a popular tourist destination for Bangladeshis, with visitor numbers reaching pre-pandemic levels in 2023. Additionally, Thailand issues approximately 4,000 medical visas to Bangladeshis each year.
