5 tcf gas field discovered in Bhola

A joint study by Russian Energy Company Gazprom and Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) has discovered a potential gas reserve of 5.109 trillion cubic feet (tcf) in Bhola, a southern district of Bangladesh. This gas reserve could significantly meet the country’s energy needs, as 1 tcf is sufficient for Bangladesh’s annual gas demand. The study, which began in 2020 and concluded in June 2024, included both 2D and 3D seismic surveys.

The study estimates a recoverable gas reserve of 2.423 tcf in the Shahbazpur and Elisha areas and another 2.686 tcf in Char Fashion. Experts say this is the largest gas discovery since the Bibiyana field in 1998.

With a 90% chance of finding at least 1.809 tcf, development projects in the Bhola area, including the drilling of 49 new wells, could alleviate household gas shortages, reduce inflation, and help lower production costs. Plans are underway to connect Bhola’s gas to the national grid.
