Bangladesh sees 44.95% rise in RMG exports to EU during Jan-May: Eurostat
Bangladesh’s apparel export to the European Union (EU) experienced significant growth of 44.95% to $9.58 billion during the first five months of (January-May) 2022, said the latest import statistics by European Statistical Office Eurostat.
According to Eurostat, the EU’s global apparel imports grew by 24.37% during the mentioned period.
During this time, the EU’s clothing imports from China reached $10.19 billion in the same period with a 20.67% year-over-year growth which made the country first in supplying to the EU, followed by Bangladesh.
However, other supplying countries also have significant growth where Cambodia by 32.68% to $1.39 billion, Pakistan by 29.28% to $1.54 billion, Indonesia by 25.36% to $546 million, Vietnam by 22.34% to $1.59 billion, and Morocco by 20.05% $1.32 billion.
Speaking to the media, Mohiuddin Rubel, director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said; “So far, the import figure of the EU indicates a good position of Bangladesh’s apparel in EU markets. But due to the recent geopolitical tension, retailers are struggling to adapt to an increasingly inflationary global market.”
