On budget proposal for the FY 23-24, though the government had allocated BDT 34,819 crore to the power and energy sector but without giving any way out to eradicate ongoing electricity and energy crisis in Bangladesh. Though government had proposed almost 27% higher allocation on this sector than the revised budget a year ago which merely guarantees a flawless energy supply on this heavily load shedding country, both at house hold and in the industries. On the contrary, they proposed some duty on petroleum products which will surely lead making energy more costly to a mass levels of consumers.
In reaction to these mentioned above, most scholars and experts in this field expressed that the government should have emphasized on renewable energy which cannot be seen in the proposal. There were no indication of how to achieve the goal to meet 10% of all electricity production from renewable sources of energy by the year 2030.
“When the country is running through with regular load shedding due to shortage of coal because of lack of foreign currencies for importing, and also lack of adequate gas supply, the authority should have given priority to ensure energy security through reliable sources such as renewable energy” said Climate and Renewable Energy finance analyst M Zakir Hossain Khan who is also the CEO of ‘The Change Initiative’, a renewable energy research and advocacy farm.
