Ms. Nicole Klingen, the South Asia Regional Director for Human Development at the World Bank, emphasized the vital role of human resource development in driving Bangladesh’s economic growth. During her visit to observe field-level activities of the RAISE project, implemented by the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) in Dhaka’s Savar and Dhamrai upazilas, she made these remarks.
Klingen highlighted that significant investments are being directed toward healthcare, education, job creation, and safety nets to provide people with opportunities to contribute to the country’s economic development. She stressed the importance of these efforts as Bangladesh aims for higher economic progress and reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to collaborating with the Government of Bangladesh in this endeavor.
Klingen led a World Bank delegation that inspected the field-level interventions of the ‘Recovery and Advancement of Informal Sector Employment (RAISE)’ project, a joint initiative funded by PKSF and the World Bank. The project’s activities in the Savar and Dhamrai regions of Dhaka are being carried out by two partner organizations of PKSF, the Society for Development Initiatives (SDI) and Social Upliftment Society (SUS).
Launched in February 2022 with total funding of US $250 million, the RAISE project aims to provide inclusive financial services and capacity-building support to 175,000 youths and micro-entrepreneurs over five years. It aligns with the Government of Bangladesh’s Perspective Plan 2021-2041 and contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by creating opportunities for youth in dignified and decent work environments.
