Restriction on using subset of PFAS chemicals in EU

World Trade Organization (WTO) is working with the IMF, OECD, and UN to establish an international carbon pricing system, aiming to avoid disputes between countries. This system would set varying carbon prices based on regional pollution levels rather than a fixed price for emissions.

In Europe, the European Commission has approved restrictions on the use of undecafluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), a chemical substitute in products like rain jackets, cosmetics, and food packaging, with some exemptions. The European Environment Agency warns that PFAS in textiles could hinder recycling efforts and the EU’s circular economy goals.

Several key appointments have been made to the European Commission, with Teresa Ribera and Wopke Hoekstra leading clean energy and climate negotiations, and others focusing on industrial strategy, environment, and agriculture. An inquiry into reduced environmental obligations under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has been launched following complaints.

Additionally, the European Parliament rejected proposals to allow banned pesticide residues in imported food, and Germany faces legal action for not enforcing the Sustainable Use of Pesticides Directive. Lastly, OECD countries provided $7.1 billion for biodiversity in 2022, with further increases expected as nations aim to reach $200 billion annually by 2030.
