Apparel industry sets benchmark in worker benefits: BKMEA

Apparel industry in Bangladesh offers the highest compensation and benefits to workers through three active programs, said Fazlee Shamim Ehsan, Executive President of BKMEA, during an awareness event on social protection schemes at Fakir Fashion Ltd, Narayanganj.

Mr. Ehsan highlighted that the sector leads in providing wages, as well as injury and death compensations. He shared an example of a worker’s family receiving Tk36 lakh as death benefits, underscoring the industry’s commitment to supporting employees and their families. The compensation fund, sourced from factory owners, covers major injuries and fatalities.

Fakir Fashion Ltd, employing 18,000 people, exported goods worth $215 million in FY 2024 and aims for $256 million in the current fiscal year. Chief Textile Officer Md Hafizur Rahman affirmed the company’s dedication to employee welfare alongside government benefits.

BKMEA’s awareness initiative, supervised by UNCDF and supported by the H&M Foundation, targets 25,000 workers, 450 middle-level officials, and 450 worker representatives from 30 garment factories in Dhaka, Narayanganj, and Gazipur. The programs focus on the Central Fund, Employment Injury Scheme, and Mother and Child Support Scheme to enhance understanding of available welfare facilities and strengthen social protection for RMG workers.
