Mohammad Ali Khokon resigned today from his position as president of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), citing personal reasons. Showkat Aziz Russell, chairman of Amber Group and former BTMA vice-president, has been appointed as his successor.
BTMA board of directors accepted Khokon’s resignation during a meeting at its Gulshan office. Khokon, who has served as BTMA president since 2018, was not present at the meeting.
In his resignation letter, Khokon expressed that while it was an honor to serve as BTMA president, his health and business have suffered, requiring his focus. He also noted that this transition could bring a fresh perspective to the association.
The primary textile sector, represented by the BTMA, has faced significant challenges in recent years, including a severe gas crisis, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and high inflation both domestically and internationally.
