‘Better Cotton’ initiates research to empower women in Indian cotton industry

Better Cotton has initiated a research project in India, funded by ISEAL, to empower women in the cotton sector and boost their farm-level representation. Women are essential to India’s cotton farming but face obstacles such as limited education, travel restrictions, and unpaid domestic work. The project, led by Better Cotton’s Jyoti Narain Kapoor, aims to identify effective empowerment strategies by collaborating with Cotton Connect India and WWF India, which support over 125,000 cotton farmers in Maharashtra and Telangana.

Through training and leadership development in community roles, such as Producer Unit Managers and Field Facilitators, the initiative seeks to promote sustainable farming practices and empower women in cotton cultivation. The insights will contribute to Better Cotton’s 2030 Impact Target on women’s empowerment, creating pathways for leadership and scaling sustainable practices across regions.
