Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) needs to be fixed: BFLLFEA

Leaders of Bangladesh’s leather sector have urged the government to make the Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) in Savar operational, as it is crucial for boosting their export potential. During a meeting with Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, the Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leathergoods, and Footwear Exporters’ Association (BFLLFEA) highlighted the challenges faced by factory owners in the Savar Tannery Industrial Estate due to the non-functional CETP.

BFLLFEA adviser M.A. Rashid Bhuiyan expressed frustration over government inaction, stating that industrialists were falsely promised ready infrastructure when the tanneries were relocated from Hazaribagh to Savar. As a result, factory owners are forced to sell their goods at lower prices in China rather than accessing broader international markets.

The finance adviser acknowledged the sector’s issues and promised to address them. He emphasized the leather sector’s potential for export diversification and noted that resolving these problems would benefit related industries, such as fisheries and livestock. Association Chairman Mohiuddin Ahmed Mahin reiterated that the sector is 100% export-oriented and requires the CETP to operate efficiently for its global competitiveness.
