Criticism on Big brands for not protecting garment workers in Bangladesh
Fashion brands like H&M and Zara are under criticism for failing to protect Bangladeshi garment workers’ rights, according to the Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC). Despite widespread protests over wages in Bangladesh a year ago, 40,000 workers still face potential arrest due to legal charges. Activists are demanding the dismissal of 36 cases filed against worker groups. The CCC has connected 45 fashion brands to suppliers responsible for these charges.
While some brands have made initial efforts, none have successfully ensured that charges are dropped. The CCC has launched an action tracker to expose brands involved, including H&M, Zara, and Levi’s. The tool aims to increase transparency and pressure these brands to take responsibility. The crackdown on wage protests last year led to violence, with four workers killed, many injured, and over 100 arrested. Kalpona Akter, a labor leader, emphasized that removing these charges is crucial for workers’ rights and fair wages in the industry.
