EU offered technical assistance on trade to the Interim government
The newly appointed EU Ambassador to Bangladesh, Michael Miller, expressed the EU’s desire to diversify trade relations with Bangladesh through increased investment and support for the country’s transition following its graduation from least developed country (LDC) status. During a meeting with Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, Miller conveyed the EU’s readiness to assist the interim government’s reform agenda, particularly in areas of human rights, good governance, and the democratic process.
EU also offered technical assistance to help recover assets stolen and deposited abroad by Bangladeshi nationals. Additionally, Miller highlighted the European Investment Bank’s (EIB) ongoing investment of 900 million euros in sectors like rail, energy, water, and health, and expressed interest in expanding this portfolio.
The two parties discussed the upcoming Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, aiming to further elevate Bangladesh-EU relations. Miller reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting the Rohingya community in Bangladesh, stressing that their safe and dignified return to Myanmar is the only sustainable solution. Hossain welcomed the EU’s offer of assistance and emphasized the need for support in improving Bangladesh’s technical and vocational training, as well as in the health and education sectors.
