Finalizing post-LDC surviving plan by October: Interim Government
The interim government of Bangladesh is finalizing a post-LDC (Least Developed Country) survival strategy by October 2026, despite some business leaders calling for a delay following the fall of the Awami League government. The Economic Relations Division (ERD) is coordinating input from various ministries to outline steps for the transition both before and after the country graduates from LDC status.
Ministry of Commerce is drafting policies on subsidies for fisheries and agriculture, while the Finance Division is exploring alternatives to export cash incentives. Bangladesh must submit a justified application by November if it seeks to postpone the graduation, as determined by the UN Committee for Development Policy (UNCDP).
Experts, including former World Bank economist Dr. Zahid Hussain, note that Bangladesh’s graduation is unlikely to be delayed, as the country surpasses the thresholds for LDC status. Arguments about unpreparedness or export challenges are unlikely to hold, as commercial benefits will still be available in key markets like the EU post-graduation.
