Government plans to have a task force for semi-conductor industry

Bangladesh is planning to develop its semiconductor sector with a focus on testing, assembly, and scaling capabilities. A high-level taskforce, comprising industry, academia, diaspora, and government representatives, will collaborate with the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) to create a roadmap for growth.

At a BIDA-organized meeting titled “Semiconductors – A New Frontier for the Bangladesh Economy and Employment,” stakeholders discussed opportunities and challenges. Principal Secretary M Siraz Uddin Miah urged leveraging BIDA as a central platform for aligning government policies.

Keynote presenter Mashuque Rahman emphasized priority areas in the semiconductor value chain, while BIDA’s Executive Chairman Ashik Chowdhury identified immediate growth opportunities in packaging, assembly, and testing. Currently, the sector generates $6 million annually, primarily from integrated circuit design services.

Recommendations included updating university curricula, offering semiconductor-focused courses, establishing shared training facilities, protecting intellectual property, and engaging non-resident Bangladeshis for global promotion. Notable attendees included representatives from academia, the ICT division, and companies like ULKASEMI, ‘PrimeSilicon Technology’, and Neural Semiconductors Limited.
