New monthly highest remittance record in December 2024 from Bangladeshi expats
Bangladesh received a record-breaking $2.64 billion in remittance in December 2024, marking the highest monthly inflow in its history, according to Bangladesh Bank. Notably, $118 million was sent in a single day between December 30 and 31, setting a daily record as well.
Ms. Husne Ara Shikha, a spokesperson for Bangladesh Bank, announced that December’s remittance represented a 32.5% year-on-year growth. During the July-December 2024 period, total remittance inflows reached $13.77 billion, reflecting a robust 27.6% increase compared to $10.8 billion during the same period in 2023.
This surge in remittances highlights the vital role of expatriates in bolstering Bangladesh’s economy, providing much-needed foreign exchange reserves, and supporting economic stability. The growth underscores increased trust in banking channels and efforts to promote formal remittance transfer systems.
