Bangladesh government has canceled all activities related to issuing Commercially Important Person (CIP) cards for 2023, according to a circular from the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB). CIP status is typically awarded annually to businesspeople who contribute significantly to the country’s export and trade. While the reasons for this year’s cancellation remain unclear, the instruction reportedly came from the commerce ministry.
CIP cardholders enjoy privileges like priority seats on government transport and access to VIP airport lounges. Business leaders, like Ashraf Ahmed from the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce, expressed disappointment and urged the government to continue the practice of recognizing key contributors to the economy.
