RMG wage adjustment by April ’25
Bangladesh’s Ministry of Labor and Employment will decide on a potential minimum wage adjustment for garment workers by April 2025, following the formation of a committee to assess wage feasibility amidst inflation. The committee, comprising representatives from both workers and factory owners, has held initial meetings and aims to submit recommendations on wage adjustments by next April. Despite previous wage compliance, a few factories still need to meet minimum wage standards or clear arrears due to financial strain.
Additionally, the government is working on labor law reforms, expected by March 2025, to align with international standards, including easing trade union rules and amending sections related to worker rights and benefits. A tripartite committee is reviewing these changes as well as setting up provisions like contributory provident funds and a rationing system for workers. BGMEA also reports that over 80% of garment factories now provide daycares, with ongoing monitoring to ensure compliance across the sector.
