Talks with Ms. Ekaterina Semenova, Charge d’Affair of Embassy of Russian Federation

Bangladesh Textile Journal had an introductory meeting with Charge d’Affair of Russian Federation Ms. Ekaterina Semenov this morning at the embassy of Russian Federation. Discussions took on different issues including the current trade situation between Bangladesh and Russian Federation, the trade barriers, payment method and banking system, near invest plan and so on as well we had an open discussion on geo-political factors that hinders Russian businesses with the rest of the world but indeed they are overcoming them one by one.

According to Ms. Ekaterina, Russia and Bangladesh had 3 billion USD business transaction in 2021 though it fall drastically since the special Russian invasion to Ukraine, due to many western sanctions imposed to them including taken-off Russia from SWIFT, the biggest legal fund transfer authority in the World. The difference between the data of volume of export to Russia from Bangladesh differs from Russian statistics, mainly due to some exports from Bangladesh went to Russia via a third party like Turkiye but the ultimate destination and original buyer was Russia . And the figure we see from different trade data analysis and statistic authority is due to this fact that they are counted on be-half of the immediate shipping destinations.

She said Bangladeshi RMG product is one the finest and much competitive in price in the whole World and Russia is very much keen to boost their business with Bangladesh. She is witnessing more and more RMG buyer’s requests from Russia who are really keen about procuring RMG from Bangladesh and Russian embassy is trying their best to help them with information. Since there is no trade attaché or trade department in Russian embassy in Dhaka and the nearest one is located in New Delhi, India, exporters sometimes lack adequate information about Russian importers,  Bangladesh always wish that Russian federation opens up their trade department to boost more business between Russia and Bangladesh.

One of the fabulous example that Russia is partnering with Bangladesh is Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant which will be in operation next year having production capacity of 2,400 MW in two different plant. The interesting thing is these power plants are identical with the plant located in Russia a few years ago which are running good and they are well tested and trusted in performance. She hoped that more Russian investment will come to Bangladesh in the future days on energy and technology sectors.
