TESCO urges to support farmers in the UK

At the Oxford Farming Conference, Tesco’s Chief Commercial Officer, Ashwin Prasad, called on the UK government to establish a clear vision for sustainable agriculture through increased investment, policy certainty, and a long-term land use strategy. A new Tesco report, created with Harper Adams University, surveyed over 300 UK farmers, revealing that 74% are concerned about climate change and 67% are already experiencing its effects. However, high upfront costs, uncertain financial returns, and lack of government support hinder the implementation of environmental measures.

Tesco is advocating for common environmental standards to guide investment in sustainable farming techniques and improve funding for innovative practices. Additionally, Tesco announced plans for two low-carbon concept farms in collaboration with suppliers Branston (potatoes) and ABP (livestock). These farms will trial technologies like low-carbon fertilizers, alternative fuels, and carbon removal techniques, focusing on soil health, biodiversity, and grazing management. The initiative aims to provide a model for scaling sustainable farming practices and achieving net-zero emissions.

Prasad emphasized the need for government and industry collaboration to create the right incentives, ensuring UK agriculture thrives as a driver of sustainability and economic growth. Tesco also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting farmers in reducing environmental impacts and maintaining affordable food production.
