Textile and Jute adviser urged US to invest in Jute sector

Textiles and Jute Adviser Brigadier General (retired) M Sakhawat Hussain urged the United States to invest in Bangladesh’s jute and jute products industries, highlighting the sector’s significant potential. During a meeting with US Embassy Charge d’Affaires Helen LaFave, he emphasized opportunities for foreign investment in Bangladesh’s public jute and textile mills, supported by skilled manpower.

Mr. Sakhawat noted the growing global demand for jute products as eco-friendly alternatives to plastic, and mentioned the government’s ban on polythene bags in super shops from 1 October, with jute and cloth bags as substitutes. He also sought US cooperation in developing a dockyard and investing in the Matarbari Deep Seaport and shipbuilding industries. La-Fave reaffirmed the US commitment to working with Bangladesh to reduce the trade deficit and strengthen bilateral ties.
