Timely wages is the highest priority: S M Mannan Kochi
Mr. S M Mannan (Kochi), leading the Sammilito Parishad panel, prioritizes ensuring timely payment of salaries and bonuses for over four million garment workers as the primary goal. His panel secured all 35 director positions in the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) biennial election.
Mr. Kochi aims to be nominated as BGMEA president and address challenges faced by small and medium-scale factories, such as wage increases and issues with customs, bond facilities, and regulations. He plans to resolve harassment allegations and delays in business processes by facilitating discussions among top officials of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) and business people. Bangladesh’s impending graduation from a least developed to a developing country in 2026 poses challenges for the garment industry’s preferential trade benefits. Kochi seeks to negotiate with the government for the reinstatement and retention of incentives until 2026, similar to strategies adopted by countries like China and India to support their industries globally.
