US Dollar gets 5% costlier within 2 weeks

Price of US dollar in Dhaka’s kerb market has increased by about 5% over the past two weeks due to recent violence linked to the quota reform movement. The dollar was selling for Tk 124 to Tk 125 yesterday, up from Tk 118 to Tk 119 two weeks ago. The volatility in the foreign exchange market is attributed to a sudden drop in remittance inflow caused by an internet blackout, which prevented remitters from sending money through banking channels.

Additionally, fewer expatriates returning home with US dollars has exacerbated the crisis. Despite claims from the Money Changers’ Association of Bangladesh that dollars were being sold at Tk 119, market insiders report higher rates.
