BEZA to cancel contract of SBG in Mirsarai, chattogram
Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) has requested approval from the interim government to terminate its agreement with SBG Economic Zone Ltd for a project within the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar (BSMSN) in Mirsarai, Chattogram. BEZA officials cite the consortium—comprising Sikder Group, Bashundhara Group, and GasMin Ltd—for failing to meet contractual obligations, including the development of the 500-acre site by 2020.
A senior BEZA official, speaking anonymously, revealed that a letter has been sent to the chief adviser of the interim government seeking approval to cancel the agreement. This would mark the first cancellation of an economic zone project in Bangladesh, previously hindered by political pressure.
Despite multiple warnings, the consortium has made little progress on essential infrastructure like roads, utility lines, and an effluent treatment plant. The project, originally intended to attract $2 billion in foreign investment, has stalled, and SBG Economic Zone Ltd now owes BEZA approximately Tk 85 crore.
