Country’s apparel exports to USA declined 21.77% during January to August this year

During January-August of 2023, the United States has witnessed a significant decline of 21.77% in its apparel imports from Bangladesh. According to data released by the Office of Textiles and Apparel (Otexa) under the US Department of Commerce, the US imported apparel worth $5.18 billion from Bangladesh in the first eight months of 2023, as opposed to $6.62 billion during the same period in 2022.

Bangladesh holds the position of being the third-largest apparel supplier to the United States. Otexa data reveals that the United States’ overall apparel imports from across the world have also seen a substantial decrease of 22.77% in January-August 2023, amounting to $53.45 billion compared to $69.21 billion during the corresponding period in 2022.

Among the top apparel import sources for the US, including China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, India, and Indonesia, all have experienced significant negative growth in both value and volume. The US’ imports from China, the largest apparel source, have declined by 29.47%, while imports from the second-largest source, Vietnam, dropped by 24.57%.

Imports from other countries such as India, Indonesia, Cambodia, Mexico, Honduras, Pakistan, and South Korea have also decreased by 21.59%, 26.09%, 27.28%, 8.87%, 22.26%, 29.24%, and 11.74%, respectively.”
