If reserve falls below 10 billion USD, IMF won’t come to help: Prof. Rehman Sobhan

The Chairman of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Prof. Rehman Sobhan, has cautioned that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will not extend assistance if Bangladesh’s foreign exchange reserves continue to decline and dip below the $10 billion threshold. Prof. Sobhan also noted that despite the economic challenges, Bangladesh’s situation remains relatively favorable compared to Sri Lanka, thanks to higher remittances and export earnings.

He expressed concern about the current state of Bangladesh’s foreign exchange reserves, which have fallen below $20 billion, a far cry from the $30 billion level he never imagined it would drop below. Prof. Sobhan emphasized that if the reserves continue to dwindle and fall below $10 billion, it would pose a severe risk to Bangladesh, and the IMF might not be inclined to provide support.

In light of this situation, Prof. Sobhan recommended implementing import restrictions, prioritizing specific products. These remarks were made during an event titled “Conversation with Professor Rehman Sobhan,” hosted by the Economic Reporters Forum at their Dhaka office.
