ILO suggested to reform labor policy to eliminate unrest in RMG sectors
International Labor Organization (ILO) has raised concerns over ongoing labor unrest in Bangladesh’s ready-made garment sector, emphasizing the need for immediate reforms in wage structures and labor laws.
In a statement released on Sunday, 29 September, the ILO highlighted that addressing systemic issues, such as wage restructuring and enhancing labor protections, is essential for fostering sustainable industrial relations between workers and employers. These reforms, the organization stressed, are critical for ensuring fair wages and long-term stability in the sector.
The ILO confirmed it is closely monitoring labor unrest in both the RMG and other sectors, which have exposed underlying issues in need of urgent resolution. The organization called for all stakeholders—including employers, workers, and the government—to engage in meaningful social dialogue to uphold workers’ rights while ensuring the economic sustainability of the industry.
“It not only supports sustainable business practices and improved working conditions but also advances social justice and decent work for all,” the ILO stated.
The organization praised the RMG sector for reaching a significant agreement on 24 September between workers and employers in Ashulia, following heightened tensions. This agreement, the ILO noted, offers hope for more harmonious industrial relations and lasting peace in the industry.
The ILO identified five key areas requiring immediate action.
