Japan-Bangladesh EPA negotiation going on to build stronger economic ties

Japan is negotiating an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with Bangladesh to strengthen economic ties, Japanese Ambassador IWAMA Kiminori announced. In a meeting at the Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), he highlighted Japan’s role in key development projects, including the Dhaka Metro Rail and a new terminal at Dhaka Airport. Japan sees Bangladesh, particularly Chattogram, as a strategic hub for South Asia, aiming to diversify investments and enhance human resource development. The ambassador also underscored the importance of government-to-government cooperation to identify new collaborative opportunities.
JETRO’s country representative, Yuji Ando, expressed the need for better connectivity, suggesting a direct Chattogram-Bangkok flight to facilitate Japanese business access. JETRO pledged to work on boosting connectivity and business opportunities between Japan and Bangladesh.
CCCI Administrator Muhammad Anwar Pasha praised Japan’s financial and technical assistance, especially in large-scale infrastructure, health, education, and energy projects. He invited Japanese investors to leverage Chattogram’s economic zones for further investment. Various CCCI leaders, local and international dignitaries, and industry experts were present to discuss Japan’s longstanding relationship with Bangladesh, with hopes to expand it further in sectors such as logistics and industrial development.
