New eco-fiber ‘Kelsun’ is re-invented from seaweed

Keel Labs, formerly AlgiKnit, has developed Kelsun™ fiber, a biodegradable and 100% biobased textile fiber made from seaweed-derived alginate. Designed as an eco-friendly alternative to conventional fibers, Kelsun is responsibly sourced and biodegradable in wastewater. The company, founded by Tessa Callaghan and Aleks Gosiewski, aims to address waste in the fashion industry through sustainable innovation.

Keel Labs has launched its first commercial product, the Kelsun Universal Blanket Shirt, in partnership with OuterKnown, a sustainable apparel brand co-founded by pro surfer Kelly Slater. The shirt blends 30% Kelsun fiber with 70% regenerative organic cotton, offering the same comfort, quality, and performance as ‘OuterKnown’s original products.

‘OuterKnown’, known for its commitment to sustainable materials, highlights the partnership as a step forward in combining high-quality apparel with environmentally responsible practices. Both companies celebrate the collaboration as a pivotal moment for advancing sustainable textiles and inspiring future innovations in the fashion industry.
