RMG laborers block Dhaka-Tangail Highway for the fifth consecutive Day

Workers hailing from various garment factories in Gazipur’s Konabari vicinity embarked on protest marches, effectively obstructing the Dhaka-Tangail highway for the fifth consecutive day. Their primary demand is a raise in the minimum basic salary to Tk 23,000.

Positioned along one side of the Dhaka-Tangail highway, their demonstration resulted in sporadic interruptions to traffic flow on the opposing side. Similarly, laborers in the Mouchak and Telichala areas of Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur have been engaged in protest marches, seeking salary increments since 23rd of October.

For a brief respite, the strike was put on hold during the holidays on Friday. Nevertheless, the workers resumed their strike on Saturday again.

Md Asaduzzaman, the Assistant Commissioner of the Konabari Zone within the Gazipur Metropolitan Police, noted that, despite a reduced number of vehicles on the road on Saturday, the presence of these agitating workers caused some traffic congestion. After engaging in dialogue, the workers were eventually persuaded to vacate the roadway.
