The Minimum Wage Board is expected to finalize the revised wage structure for the ready-made garment sector today, following calls for adjustments from various rights groups domestically and internationally.

7th  meeting of the Wage Board will convene to settle on the new wage structure based on the recently published gazette, as per officials familiar with the matter. On November 11, the Ministry of Labour and Employment issued a gazette notification setting Tk 12,500 as the minimum monthly wage for the apparel industry.

The ministry had invited opinions, objections, or recommendations from stakeholders or individuals within 14 days of the gazette’s publication, a period that concluded on Friday. Local rights groups advocated for an increase in the minimum wage to Tk 23,000, while some factory owners proposed reducing it to Tk 10,400. Both parties submitted letters to the Minimum Wage Board. As of Friday, the Board received over 200 letters, including 168 from garment factory owners, 30 from trade union federations, and one each from Transparency International Bangladesh and Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust.
