Zara will stop buying RMG from Myanmar

Multinational fashion house Zara will not buy clothes from Myanmar. The company’s owner, Inditex said they are in the process of ending its purchase from Naypyidaw, Reuters reported recently.

Inditex told Reuters that global labor unions have been calling on industrial companies to sever ties with the junta-ruled country. Responding to that call, Zara will stop sourcing products from Myanmar. A company spokesperson wrote in an e-mail message, “Indatex is in the process of phasing out Myanmar in response to the call of industrials.” We will reduce the number of active producers from the country.

Inditex has yet to give a specific timeline for when it will fully exit Myanmar. They do not publish any list of suppliers. So it’s not clear exactly how many factories in Myanmar supply the fast-fashion giant. The country has been mired in political and humanitarian crisis since the military overthrew the Aung San Suu Kyi government in early 2021.

So various brands and retailers have been pressured not to buy products from the country. But workers will lose their jobs if big buyers turn away.
