RMG factory unrest may lead to 30% order shift to other countries

31 RMG factories in Savar and Ashulia shut down due to ongoing worker protests. Fifteen of these factories closed indefinitely under Section 13(1) of the Bangladesh Labor Act, which enforces a “no work, no pay” policy, while four factories were shut after workers refused to work. In Gazipur, three additional RMG units were also closed.

A tragic incident occurred in Ashulia, where a female worker, Rokeya Begum, 35, was killed in a clash between two groups of workers in front of Mascot Garments. The clash between workers from Mascot Garments and Radiance Fashion escalated after protests demanding the reopening of Mascot Garments, which had been closed for days due to labor unrest. The confrontation resulted in bricks being thrown, injuring at least five workers. Rokeya was severely injured and later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Despite the clashes, the overall situation in Savar and Ashulia remained calm, thanks to the presence of security forces, including police, RAB, APBN, and BGB. Many workers peacefully returned to their workstations despite the ongoing closures.
