BEPZA expands northern industrial footprint with new EPZ plans

Bangladesh is set to rebalance its industrial landscape as the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority moves forward with plans to establish two new export processing zones (EPZs) in Rangpur and Sirajganj. The initiative reflects a strategic push to accelerate industrialization in the country’s northern region while advancing export diversification and sustainability.
The announcement was made during the celebration of BEPZA Day 2026, marking 46 years of the organization’s contribution to Bangladesh’s export-led growth. Major General Mohammad Moazzem Hossain confirmed that both projects are currently in the planning phase, alongside ongoing developments in Jashore and Patuakhali.
The expansion underscores a broader policy shift to decentralize industrial growth away from traditional hubs such as Dhaka and Chattogram. By extending manufacturing capacity into underdeveloped regions, the new EPZs are expected to strengthen regional economic balance, reduce migration pressure on major cities, and create new investment destinations.
Progress is already visible in Rangpur, where approximately 450 acres of land from the Rangpur Sugar Mill in Gobindaganj’s Sahebganj area have been allocated for the EPZ. Industry sources estimate the zone could generate employment for over 100,000 people, significantly boosting local livelihoods, skills development, and workforce participation—particularly among women.
BEPZA’s expansion plans are backed by a strong track record. Established under the Prime Minister’s Office following the BEPZA Act of 1980, the authority has been a cornerstone of Bangladesh’s export-oriented industrialization. Over the past four decades, it has attracted around $7.29 billion in foreign investment and facilitated exports exceeding $125 billion.
At present, BEPZA operates eight EPZs and two economic zones across the country, employing nearly 550,000 workers. A notable share of this workforce comprises women, underscoring the zones’ role in promoting social inclusion and economic empowerment.
With the addition of Rangpur and Sirajganj, BEPZA aims to deepen Bangladesh’s industrial base, attract diversified investments beyond ready-made garments, and reinforce the country’s position as a competitive and sustainable manufacturing hub in the global market.
