Tuomo Poutiainen, Country Director of the International Labor Organization (ILO), met with Anwar Hossain, Administrator of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, at the BGMEA Complex on Sunday, 5th January to discuss key issues in Bangladesh’s ready-made garment industry.
The meeting focused on workplace safety, workers’ rights, labor law reforms, and environmental sustainability, as stated in a media release. Discussions also highlighted ongoing ILO-led initiatives, such as the Better Work Bangladesh program, which aims to improve working conditions and ensure occupational safety for RMG workers.
Both Poutiainen and Hossain stressed the importance of continued efforts to foster safer, fairer, and more sustainable workplaces. They also explored opportunities for future collaboration between the ILO and BGMEA, particularly in capacity building aligned with international standards, including the European Union’s Due Diligence Directive, which emphasizes accountability for human rights and environmental impacts in supply chains.
Anwar Hossain highlighted the significant progress made in workplace safety, workers’ rights, and environmental sustainability, reaffirming the sector’s commitment to further improvement. He also urged the ILO to support initiatives promoting social dialogue, harmonious industrial relations, and workforce skill development, especially in AI and technology.
