BGMEA calls for urgent factory inspections after nationwide earthquakes

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has urged all garment factory owners to conduct immediate structural inspections following Friday’s 5.7-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tremors over the weekend.
In a notice issued Saturday, BGMEA warned that major quakes are often followed by strong aftershocks, putting thousands of workers at risk in multi-storey factory buildings. The association advised members to check for cracks or structural weaknesses through certified structural or civil engineers and to ensure safety assessments of elevators, boilers, generators, and sub-stations — areas where damage could trigger serious accidents.
Bangladesh recorded additional quakes on Saturday, measuring 3.7 and 3.3 on the Richter scale, leaving at least a dozen people dead and many injured. The BGMEA stressed that strengthening safety measures now is critical to preventing further casualties.
