Billion Dollar project to enhance logistic at Bangabondhu shilpa Nagar

Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (Beza) is launching a $1.127 billion project to enhance logistics and connectivity at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar, the largest industrial zone in Chattogram. The initiative aims to create a climate-resilient, smart industrial zone with comprehensive infrastructure and renewable energy, including road connectivity, a logistics hub with jetties, utility infrastructure, and an intelligent transportation system. The project is set for completion by 2030.

Businesses are concerned about a government decision to deny utility connections and banking services to factories outside economic zones, given that Bangabandhu Shilpa Nagar will not be fully operational for another six years. The World Bank has preliminarily agreed to fund the logistics facilities, pending a feasibility study and design formulation.

Beza Executive Chairman Shaikh Yusuf Harun stated that three jetties are planned for the industrial zone—one by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority and two by private investors. The project aims to integrate multimodal connectivity, linking sea routes to Chattogram port and other ports, and connecting the industrial zone to the Dhaka-Chattogram railway and highways.
