Bangladesh Bank wishes to be a fully autonomous body

Bangladesh Bank Officers’ Welfare Council has called on the interim government to amend the Bangladesh Bank Order 1972 to grant full autonomy to the central bank, ensuring its administrative, operational, and financial independence. In a memorandum submitted to the finance adviser, the council also urged for the dissolution of the Financial Institutions Division to avoid conflicts of interest in the banking sector.

During a press conference, council leaders emphasized the need for reforms to restore good governance in the financial sector. They advocated for the central bank to operate free from political interference, focusing on tasks such as managing interest rates and licensing financial institutions. Additionally, they proposed structural reforms to the central bank’s board and suggested that the governor’s position be made a constitutional post with full ministerial status. They also called for the conversion of deputy governor positions from contractual to regular posts to strengthen the institution’s governance.
