Committee established to stabilize BEXIMCO unrest
Government has established a six-member committee to address labor and business challenges at the Beximco Industrial Park, which hosts 24 industrial units and employs approximately 40,000 workers. The panel, led by Labour and Employment Adviser M Sakhawat Hussain, will propose short-, medium-, and long-term solutions to ongoing labor unrest and ensure a conducive work environment.
Beximco is struggling with halted production due to liquidity issues, raw material shortages, and unpaid wages. Banks have ceased issuing fresh funds, with Janata Bank reporting that Tk 19,000 crore of Beximco’s Tk 23,000 crore loans are classified as non-performing. To assist, the government has allocated Tk 60 crore from the national budget to cover October wages.
A five-member secretarial committee and BGMEA administrators will support the advisory panel. The crisis follows the arrest of Beximco’s vice-chairman, Salman F Rahman, and the appointment of a Bangladesh Bank receiver to manage the conglomerate’s finances.
