CPD suggests to double the salary of Tannery workers
Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) suggests a minimum monthly wage of Tk 22,776 for tannery workers in Bangladesh, citing current market conditions and high inflation. Despite a minimum wage of Tk 13,500 set in 2018, many workers receive less, with 16 percent earning below the set amount despite their tenure. The CPD’s survey of 35 tanneries and 105 workers in Savar found 43 percent earning less than Tk 15,881 monthly after six years in their positions. Lack of awareness about wage grading and government-set minimums was prevalent among workers. The CPD highlights the absence of promotion mechanisms and inconsistencies in wage payment timing among factories.
Weak monitoring by the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments contributes to non-compliance with the minimum wage. Liaquat Ali Mollah, chairman of the Minimum Wages Board for tannery workers, acknowledges the challenges in implementation but emphasizes the need for fair wages and improved working conditions, including medical allowances, for tannery workers.
