Finnish ‘Spinnova’ developed sustainable fiber from wood pulp

Finnish company Spinnova has developed a sustainable fiber from wood pulp as an eco-friendly alternative to cotton, potentially transforming the textile industry. This cellulose fiber is produced without harmful chemicals, is 100% recyclable, and has moved to large-scale production after a decade of development. Targeting the denim industry in Bangladesh, Spinnova’s fiber retains cotton-like qualities in appearance and feel and exhibits better thermal resistance, a property tested by Adidas, which has already launched hoodies using this fiber.

Spinnova’s method, which uses Kraft pulp in a dry mechanical process without chemicals or water, presents significant environmental benefits. Bangladesh, as a major apparel exporter, is well-positioned to adopt this technology, aligning with brands’ increasing demands for sustainable materials. At a recent Dhaka seminar, Spinnova’s executives highlighted the benefits and scalability of the innovation, especially for high-demand applications like denim. The seminar, hosted by SAS Enterprise, aimed to encourage the textile sector toward more sustainable practices, with Spinnova’s fiber seen as a promising advancement for eco-friendly fashion production.
