Why has the major exporter ‘Noman Group’ approach to the Home Affairs Advisor?
Frustrated by extortion and blackmailing, leading textile and garment export company Noman Group has sought assistance from the interim government’s Home Affairs Advisor. In a recent application to the Advisor, Noman Group accused a syndicate comprising corrupt former employees, certain sensationalist journalists, questionable publications, and human rights organizations of being involved in extortion and blackmail.
Copies of the complaint have been sent to the Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Public Security Division, the Inspector General of Police, CID’s Additional IGP, and the DMP Commissioner. Besides filing the complaint, the company has also lodged a case under the Digital Security Act, naming eight individuals.
In a conversation with media, Noman Group’s Managing Director, Mohammad Abdullah Zaber, explained that the syndicate aims to harm the reputation of export-oriented companies like theirs. He stressed the impact of these incidents, saying, “Every negative report forces us to answer foreign buyers.” He urged government agencies and financial institutions not to act based on unfounded reports but instead rely on thorough investigations.
Mr. Zaber added, “After recent political changes, extortion rings have targeted industrial establishments, including ours.” He emphasized that without quick legal intervention, Bangladesh’s export sector could suffer significant harm, which would affect foreign currency reserves and the national economy. Noman Group, with nearly 40 years in the apparel sector and an annual turnover of $1.3 billion, employs approximately 80,000 workers and has contributed significantly to the national economy.
He continued by expressing the hope for a business-friendly Bangladesh where ethical businesses can thrive without harassment. Mr. Zaber highlighted the company’s success under its founder Mr. Nurul Islam and emphasized that neither Noman Group nor its executives have ever been affiliated with any political party.
The complaint also includes specific allegations against a group that allegedly used false social media posts and misinformation to defame Noman Group. In response, the company has requested strict legal actions to secure a safe business environment.
The Home Ministry, aware of recent worker unrest and sabotage at various garment factories in Dhaka, has already implemented enhanced security measures to protect the sector, which is one of the primary earners of foreign currency for Bangladesh.
