Demand for bio-based materials is expected to accelerate as global apparel brands increasingly shift from fossil-based synthetic fibers to sustainable alternatives, according to a new report released by Sorona® and global trend forecasting company WGSN.

The report identifies three major material trends set to shape the textile industry through 2027—New Nature, Climate Flex, and Sensory Empowerment—highlighting the growing adoption of hybrid bio-based materials blended with natural fibers such as cotton and wool.

The global bio-based materials market is projected to reach US$285.3 billion by 2029, growing at a 14.5% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). Rising consumer preference for natural textiles is also reflected in online searches, with interest in wool base layers increasing by 61% and cotton leggings by 21% year-on-year.

Developed by Covation Biomaterials, Sorona® is a 37% plant-based polymer designed to deliver stretch recovery, durability, and comfort while reducing reliance on petroleum-based raw materials. The company said adoption of bio-based polymers is expanding rapidly across apparel manufacturing hubs in Asia, Europe, and North America, despite ongoing challenges related to feedstock availability and production costs.
