Govt warns RMG owners over unpaid worker wage loans

Labour and Employment Adviser Brig Gen (retd) Dr. M Sakhawat Hussain has warned of stern legal action against garment factory owners who fail to repay the interest-free loans provided by the government to clear workers’ pending wages by December 2025.
At a meeting in Dhaka, he said several major groups — including Beximco, Birds, TNZ, DIRD, Niagara Textiles, Roar Fashion, Mahmud Jeans, Style Craft, and Gold Star Garments — have defaulted on repayments despite agreements.
The adviser warned that defaulters could face passport suspension, Interpol red alerts, and asset seizures. He stressed the funds belong to workers and taxpayers, directing owners to repay by selling factories, land, or machinery if needed, in consultation with lien banks.
He also urged BGMEA and BKMEA to mediate and ensure repayment. Notably, Beximco Group alone received Tk 5.25 billion to pay over 33,000 workers and officials.
