Mohammad Hatem, managing director of MB Knit Fashion Ltd, has been appointed as the new president of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA).
BKMEA Vice President Fazlee Shamim Ehsan announced today (25th August) that Selim Osman has resigned from his positions as president and board director, citing personal reasons and health issues. Selim, who attended the board meeting virtually, confirmed his resignation during the session.
Notably, since Selim Osman was first elected BKMEA president on 22 July 2010, no competitive elections have been held within the association. While the election process was formally followed, only one panel submitted nomination papers each time. Selim’s resignation comes in the wake of the recent ouster of the Sheikh Hasina government after a mass uprising earlier this month.
In his initial response, Mr. Hatem emphasized that his primary focus would be on collaborating with the central bank to address financing challenges within the industry and working with the National Board of Revenue to streamline customs procedures. He also highlighted the importance of resuming trade negotiations with the EU to maintain preferential trade benefits and expressed intentions to strengthen ties with the U.S. market.
During an emergency board meeting, BGMEA board also appointed Fazlee Shamim, managing director of Fatullah Apparels Ltd, as executive president, and Engr Md Shamsuzzaman, managing director of Micro Fibre Group, as vice president.
Mr. Hatem, who was one of the first members of BKMEA, previously served as a director from December 1996 to April 2002. He later held the position of vice president for six terms and most recently served as executive president. Mr. Ehsan has been vice president of BKMEA for the past five years and has previously served as a director, while Mr. Shamsuzzaman has also completed three terms as a director.
