Most RMG and Textile factories are reopened except a few
Despite security concerns and police work abstention following deadly clashes with student protesters, most apparel factories, textile mills, and accessory industries in Bangladesh resumed production on Wednesday, 7th August. However, factories in Ashulia, Tongi, Gazipur, and Narayanganj faced closures due to worker unrest over unpaid wages and owners’ ties with the ousted Awami League government.
Industry insiders reported that while most factories resumed full-capacity production, some in specific areas remained closed. In Rajendrapur, Sreepur, Mawna, and Bhaluka, all factories except those under the Tusuka group were operational. In Kashempur, factories of Mondol group, DBL group, and others remained closed. In Kaliakoir and Chandra, Dressmen Apparels Ltd and Niagara Textiles Ltd were closed. All apparel factories in Chattogram resumed operations smoothly.
BGMEA Vice President Rakibul Alam Chowdhury and other industry leaders confirmed normal operations in their factories. Approximately 65% of factories continued production without issues till Wednesday evening, though conditions varied by area.
Worker unrest in Tongi’s Board Bazar over salary disputes led to further disruptions, causing some factories to close due to fears of vandalism. In Narayanganj, disturbances by outsiders attempting to seize control of the waste and surplus fabric business also caused closures.
Industry leaders met with the Army chief to seek security for the factories amidst the ongoing unrest.
